Penile curvature (penile deviation)

Penile curvature is more common than many think
Penile curvature, also known as penile deviation or Peyronie’s disease, can be congenital or develop over time. Depending on severity, it may cause pain, sexual dysfunction, or emotional distress. In our practice, we offer discreet evaluation and a tailored treatment approach – ranging from conservative therapies to surgical correction.

What happens with a penile curvature?

Penile curvature – medically known as Induratio penis plastica or Peyronie’s disease – is a benign but often distressing condition in which fibrous plaques form in the erectile tissue. These lead to a visible curvature of the penis, especially when erect. In severe cases, it can cause pain, erectile dysfunction, or even limitations during sexual intercourse.

How is the diagnosis made?

  • History and physical examination (including palpation of the hardened area)
  • Photographic documentation of the erection to determine curvature
  • Ultrasound to visualize plaques and erectile tissue

Treatment options for penile curvature

In most cases, we initially adopt a wait-and-see approach for about 12 months, as the curvature can still change during this time—in some cases, even improve. Only when the condition enters a stable phase and the level of suffering remains high do we consider further steps together with the patient.
